My tip this week is for Family Bible Time. I’ve struggled for years to come up with a Bible time that would work for all of our children. We already have a Monday evening Family Night each week. We do that using several different resources and it works very well. We have an activity, a Bible passage, prayer, a snack, and a story. Each Monday.
But I’ve been trying to find a good way to read the Bible and pray together as a family. Of course, the simplest way eluded me for a while. (I tend to overthink, overplan, and make things harder than they need to be….is this an eldest child trait?!) Finally, I came up with this:
At 8:15 pm we all pile onto Amblin Man’s and my King size bed. Various children snuggle under the top blanket and we begin. We’ve got a simple devotion book for children that our church puts out. It covers ages 8-13 or so and is perfect for our children. I simplify the questions when it’s Mr 4’s turn.
It consists of a Bible passage, a story pertaining to the concept in the passage, a question or two that we all answer out loud, and then a short prayer. We add our prayers to that prayer. Sometimes we use the “popcorn prayer” method. Sometimes we just list prayer requests and those are prayed over by the person doing the prayer. We also pray for the child we are Prayer Warriors for through Reece’s Rainbow. It only takes about 15 minutes but it is precious time. We have not missed a night in 5 months because we each cherish that time together as a family.
I love it. That is so great!
I have teens now….we do a few different things…sometimes it’s all together and other’s it’s privately in their bedrooms at bedtime.
Cherish these times….they go by really fast.
Thanks for sharing this. It is encouraging (and motivating) to me!
beautiful! i love the idea to make it short and simple and yet really cherish those moments together. in a busy family life, this seems practical and inspiring! great post.
